Recently, Pakistan's Ambassador to China, H.E. Khalil Hashmi, sent a congratulatory letter to CAS Academician Cui Peng, Chief Scientist of CPJRC, who was awarded the Pakistani government's "Sitara-e-Imtiaz". This honor recognizes his outstanding contributions to the resolution of the 2010 Attabad landslide-dammed lake and his long-term, exceptional work in promoting scientific and technological cooperation between China and Pakistan in earth sciences, climate change, and disaster prevention and reduction.

The award ceremony will be held at the President's House in Islamabad in March, 2026. The Sitara-e-Imtiaz is one of the highest honors conferred by the Government of Pakistan on foreign experts, aimed at recognizing individuals or organizations that have made exceptional contributions in major fields such as national defense and security, national interests, world peace, cultural exchange, and public service.

In 2010, a massive landslide-dammed lake formed in the Attabad area of northern Pakistan, severely threatening the lives of tens of thousands of people downstream and the safety of the China-Pakistan Karakoram Highway. As the chief Chinese scientist, Academician Cui Peng led his team on an emergency mission to assist. Through precise disaster assessment and risk analysis, his team provided critical technical support for Pakistan to formulate a scientific crisis mitigation plan, successfully resolving the emergency. His pioneering rapid assessment method for landslide-dammed lake risk has been widely promoted and applied in the field of disaster prevention and mitigation.
