China-Pakistan Training Workshop on Monitoring and Early Warning Technologies of Tsunami and Marine Hazards Held in Guangzhou

The "China-Pakistan Training Workshop on Monitoring and Early Warning Technologies of Tsunami and Marine Hazards" was held on July 13-17,2024, in Guangzhou, jointly organized by the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC), and the South China Sea Institute of Oceanography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SCSIO). Prof. Su Lijun, Deputy Director-General of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMHE) and CPJRC Director-General, Prof. Lin Jian, Distinguished Fellow of SCSIO and Leader of Shenzhen Ocean University Preparatory Team, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.
Prof. Su Lijun introduced the development of CPJRC and emphasized the collaborative researches in the Makran Sea of the North Indian Ocean as one of the major tasks of the Center. He hopes to further promote research cooperation in the region through this training workshop. Lin Jian expressed the hope for this training workshop to promote bilateral collaborations and applications of monitoring and early warning technologies of tsunami and marine hazards, and strengthen systematic researches on the North Indian Ocean.
During the training, Prof. Xu Min, Prof. Sun Zhen, Prof. Qiu Qiang, Prof. Zhang Jinchang, Prof. Wang Youshao, Prof. Yang Xiaodong, Assoc. Prof. Zheng Tingting, Assist. Prof. Zhou Pengcheng, Dr. Syed Ahsan Hussain Gardezi of SCSIO, Assoc. Prof. Ye Lingling and Assist. Prof. Liu Zhiqiang of Southern University of Science and Technology, Prof. Samina Kidwai from the National Institute of Oceanography of Pakistan, and Assoc. Professor Majid Khan from the University of Science and Technology Beijing gave respective lectures on marine hazards, submarine volcanoes, earthquake and tsunami simulation and early warning, etc. The training also organized students to visit the SCSIO No. 3 experimental ship and its specimen room.
This training workshop aims for capacity building of early-career researchers in the monitoring and early warning of tsunami and marine hazards, promoting bilateral cooperation in the modernization of marine hazards prevention and mitigation systems and capacities, promoting the application of China's cutting-edge tsunami monitoring and early warning technologies in Pakistan, and serving for the construction of Gwadar Port in Pakistan.
The training workshop lasted for five days, with 30 trainees from countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Bahrain.
