Prof. Qasim Jan, PIFI Scholar and Partner of the CPJRC, Was Honored as CAS Academician

On November 23, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as CAS) announced the list of newly elected foreign academicians in 2023, in which 30 foreign scientists were elected. Prof. Mohammad Qasim Jan, PIFI scholar of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS, and Pakistan Partner of the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (hereinafter referred to as CPJRC) was also elected as academician of the CAS.
Academician Qasim Jan is an outstanding Pakistan scientist and one of the leaders of the China-Pakistan scientific and technological cooperation. He has been engaged in geological research for a long time and is the founder of geological research in Pakistan. He has achieved internationally recognized systematic achievements in the study of Himalayan orogeny and has led the drawing of the first geological map of northern Pakistan. In addition, he has pioneered the study of the Karakoram Mountains plate collision processes, seismic hazard assessment, chromite and gemstone resources. He was elected as academician of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences in 1991, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Developing Countries in 2002, president of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences and vice chairman of the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO) in 2018, and has made important contributions to the bilateral earth sciences development, academic exchanges, talent cultivation and the China’s international academic influence improvement, and especially has played an important role in promoting the establishment of the CPJRC.
After Prof. Qasim Jan has been elected as foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. CUI Peng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. SU Lijun, Deputy Director-General of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, expressed their sincere congratulations to him and thanks for his outstanding contributions in the China-Pakistan scientific and technological cooperation, especially the construction of CPJRC.
Academician Qasim Jan is also the third Pakistani scientist elected as foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences following Prof. Atta-ur Rahman, Chemist, and Prof. Muhammad Asif Khan, Geologist.
