China-Pakistan High-level Webinar on Earth Sciences Cooperation: Thematic Webinar on Resources Environment and Green Development was Successfully Held

On July 28, 2021, the "China-Pakistan High-level Webinar on Earth Sciences Cooperation: Thematic Webinar on Resources Environment and Green Development" was successfully held by the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing. More than 40 domestic and foreign personnel participating in major projects from 6 units attended the seminar offline and online, including Shen Lei, Chief Researcher of the third research field of China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC) and Researcher of the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, CAS; backbone personnel of projects, such as Researcher Deng Xiangzheng, Researcher Wang Juanle, Researcher Dai Junhu, Researcher Zhao Jian'an, Researcher Ayman Elshakaki, Associate Researcher Zhong Shuai, and Assistant Researcher Hu Shuhan; Researcher Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of CPJRC; and other backbone personnel of projects, such as Researcher Bao Anming and Researcher Lei Jiaqiang from the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, CAS, Researcher Han Fengqing from the Qinghai Institute of Salt Lakes, CAS, Researcher Wang Yukuan from the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS & Ministry of Water Conservancy, and Dr. Abdus Samie from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan. The participants summarized the scientific research achievements in the first half of 2021, and looked forward to the key work and tasks in the second half of 2021 and in 2022.
In the webinar, Executive Director Hong Tianhua introduced the operation of CPJRC and highly affirmed the work of the third science research field in the first half of 2021. He also pointed out that a series of research results had been achieved on the basis of the existing team and data. Subsequently, the cooperative units made brief reports on a series of scientific research achievements related with resources, environment and green development of China and Pakistan, and conducted in-depth exchanges and analysis of the difficulties and problems in scientific research.
Prof. Shen Lei, Chief Scientist of the third research field, introduced the main tasks, research plans and achievements of resources environment and green development. Prof. Deng Xiangzheng and his team's backbone personnel Dr. Abdus Samie introduced the research results in aspects of land use and land cover change and agricultural development in Pakistan, and shared their research results in model simulation and R&D, agricultural resource development and community participation. On behalf of the research team of the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Prof. Bao Anming and Prof. Lei Jiaqiang introduced hydrology and water security in Pakistan, the research and development of key technologies for green development in Gwadar Port, and the introduction and demonstration of salt-tolerant and heat-tolerant ornamental plants. Prof. Wang Juanle reported on the construction of CPJRC's data sharing platform and research foundation. Prof. Han Haiqing, on behalf of the Qinghai Institute of Salt Lakes, reported on the metallogenic mechanism and the predicted amount of Pakistan's salt mine resources. Prof. Dai Junhu and his team's backbone personnel Dr. Khurram Shahzad reported on their research results on global climate change and phenological observations at home and abroad, as well as botanical research on the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalayas, the Hengduan Mountains, etc. Prof. Ayman Elshakaki introduced his research on the correlation between energy and material and his assumptions related with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Prof. Zhao Jian'an introduced the condition of Pakistan's energy and mineral resources and the basic judgment and preliminary understanding of its development and utilization.
At last, Prof. Shen Lei summarized the seminar and pointed out that in order to provide support for the work of CPJRC and complete the research tasks on green development, all cooperative units should fully absorb and share the achievements in the fields of land resources, water resources, biological resources, etc., and integrate the existing data. Next, he hoped that all units could coordinate with each other in the construction of the data platform, and strive to promote their research methods and models into the construction and research work of CPJRC, so that the entire project team could produce more high-quality results and attract more Pakistani students in the future, and the cultivation of outstanding talents could be further promoted under cooperation of China and Pakistan.
