On July 27, the "China-Pakistan High-level Webinar on Earth Sciences Cooperation - Thematic Webinar on Climate Change and Environmental Effects" was successfully held in Beijing by the second research field- Climate Change and Environmental Effects – of China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC).

The meeting was held both online and offline. Prof. Chen Fahu, Academician of CAS, the Chief Scientist of the second research field and Director of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Prof. Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of CPJRC, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. The opening ceremony was chaired by Researcher Zhang Fan, Deputy Director of CPJRC and member of the Institute Board of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, CAS. 20 experts and scholars from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources and the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of CAS attended the symposium offline, and more than 50 people attended the symposium through video conference or live video.

In the webinar, Prof. Hong Tianhua introduced the background, purpose and significance of CPJRC, its preparatory works for establishment, as well as the key projects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and related scientific issues of environmental disasters. Academician Chen Fahu made a comprehensive summary of the work of the second research field - climate change and environmental effects and put forward specific requirements for the research work of the next stage. He hoped that through this symposium, attention could be focused on the uniqueness of climate change and environmental effects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, and the discourse power of both countries on regional geosciences could be enhanced through further research cooperation with Pakistan.

Focusing on the future plans and expected results of each research direction of climate change and environmental effects, the symposium invited Researcher Chen Xuelong of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of CAS, Researcher Shangguan Donghui of the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of CAS, as well as Researchers Zhang Yinsheng and Hou Juzhi of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of CAS to make introductions from aspects of climate change and west wind-monsoon interaction, cryosphere evolution and environmental effects, hydrology in cold regions, ecological evolution and other directions respectively. The researchers sorted out the preliminary research work carried out in relation with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and the staged scientific research results achieved, and clarified and refined the research plan, the scientific research cooperation with Pakistan and expected results for the next two years. Experts in the symposium also conducted extensive discussions on the issue of atmospheric circulation and water vapor transport in the region of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which was proposed by Academician Chen Fahu, the Chief Scientist of CPJRC Research Theme II.

The meeting also invited Dr. Yasir Latif and Assistant Professor Ahmad Ijaz of University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan, Researcher Shangguan Donghui of the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of CAS, Researcher Zhu Haifeng of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of CAS, and Dr. Fahan Suhaib of Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, to make academic reports on projects such as glacier hydrology, glacier disasters, hydrometeorology, climate change and its impact.

Through this meeting, the partners and scientists of the second research field of CPJRC have further enhanced their understanding, which is of great significance for promoting the integration of disciplines and producing better and more results in the future. It can help promote the construction of CPJRC and the exchange and cooperation of talents, as well as accelerate the process of joint contribution, shared benefits and win-win.
