The 1st China-Pakistan Symposium on Hydrological and Geological Disaster Monitoring and Early Warning Held in Islamabad

From August 26 to 28, the 1st China-Pakistan Symposium on Hydrological and Geological Disaster Monitoring and Early Warning was held in Islamabad. The symposium was co-hosted by CPJRC and NDMA of Pakistan, and co-organized by IMHE-CAS, UNESCO Chair for Mountain Disaster Risk and Resilience, and QAU.

Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Climate Change Coordinator to Prime Minister Office of Pakistan; Mr. Inam Haider Malik, Chairman of NDMA; Mr. Tanveer Piracha, Director General of Institute of National Disaster Management of NDMA; Dr. Safdar Ali Shah, Director of the CPEC Office at HEC; Professor Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor of QAU; Professor Mumtaz Shah, Chairman of Earth Sciences Department at QAU; Mr. Yin Shengxin, Science Attache from the Embassy of China in Pakistan; and Professor Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of CPJRC, attended it.

The symposium featured keynotes from experts including Professor Samreen Hussain, Vice-Chancellor of Dawood University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi; Mr. Hafeez Ahmed Jamali, Director of Balochistan Civil Services Academy; Dr. Simon Sadiq, Director (Disasters Geology) of Geological Survey of Pakistan; Professor Muhammad Basharat, Institute of Geology at University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Muzaffarabad; Professor Shabeh ul Hasson, Head of the Hydro-climatology and Remote Sensing of Mountain Environments Laboratory at Institute of Geography, University of Hamburg, Germany; Professor Yang Saini, Executive Director of IRDR and Professor at Beijing Normal University; Associate Professor Lei Yu and Zhao Bo from IMHE-CAS; Professor Wu Lixin from Central South University; Professor Shen Lei and Wang Juanle from IGSNRR-CAS; Senior Engineer Li Hongxing from Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of CAS  (NIEER-CAS); and Associate Professor Wang Hao from XIEG-CAS.

To encourage young scholars to actively participate in academic exchanges, the symposium specifically included a Young Scholars Forum. Young scholars, including CPJRC Special Research Assistant Dr. Nazir Ahmed Bazai and Dr. Muhammad Hasan, Assistant Professor Dr. Wang Hao, Postdoctor Shan Xinmeng, and NDMA Engineer Dr. Umair Afzal, also shared their research findings.

Participants also held a roundtable discussion on advancing cooperation between China and Pakistan in disaster early warning and visited the Exhibition Hall of the NDMA Emergency Operations Center. Over 200 scholars from both China and Pakistan participated in it.
