Recently, UNESCO has officially approved the establishment of the "UNESCO Chair for Mountain Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience" proposed by the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment (IMHE), according to recent information released by UNESCO's Natural Sciences Sector.

Prof. Cui Peng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Leading Scientist of CPJRC, is the Chair Holder, and Prof. Yang Saini, Executive Director of Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) and Professor of Beijing Normal University, is the Co-Chair. Leveraging teams from IMHE and CPJRC, the Chair will bring together leading scholars in disaster prevention and mitigation to focus on mountain disaster reduction and resilience enhancement. Key initiatives will include systematic research on mountain disaster formation mechanisms, movement dynamics, and disaster-causing mechanism; development of disaster risk assessment and mitigation technologies; promotion of knowledge sharing in disaster prevention and mitigation; and support for mountainous regions across Asia and globally in confronting disaster threats, thereby contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Since its inception in 1992, the UNESCO Chairs Programme has become a vital platform for global knowledge sharing and innovative cooperation. The establishment of this Chair will further deepen international collaboration in disaster risk reduction and contribute Chinese expertise to global disaster governance.
