Mr. Sajid Baloch, Secretary of Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan, Visited CPJRC

On June 12, 2025, upon the invitation of China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC), Prof. Sajid Baloch, Secretary,Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan, visited the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment (IMHE), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). During his visit, he engaged in discussions on promoting scientific and technological cooperation between China and Pakistan. Prof. Kang Shichang, Director-General of IMHE, and Academician Cui Peng, Leading Scientist of CPJRC, attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Su Lijun, Director of CPJRC.

Prof. Kang Shichang extended a warm welcome to Mr. Sajid Baloch and his delegation. He emphasized that IMHE attached great importance to exchanges with the scientific and technological community in Pakistan, and was leveraging CPJRC to comprehensively enhance cooperation between the two sides in areas such as research projects, academic exchanges, and talent cultivation. In the future, IMHE will promote and facilitate more Chinese scientific and technological forces to undertake practical and in-depth collaborations tailored to Pakistan’s scientific and technological needs, as well as the construction requirements of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), working hand in hand to usher in a new era of scientific and technological cooperation between China and Pakistan.

Mr. Sajid Baloch remarked that the profound friendship between China and Pakistan had deep historical roots, likening it to something "higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the Arabian Sea, and sweeter than honey." He highly commended the unwavering efforts and substantial contributions made by IMHE and CPJRC in advancing scientific and technological cooperation between China and Pakistan. He also expressed that the Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan would lend its fullest support to collaborations between Pakistani scientific and technological circles and IMHE, as well as other research institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ensuring the optimal utilization of CPJRC as a crucial platform.      

During the meeting, Dr. Lei Yu, Deputy Director of CPJRC, elaborated on the IMHE's strengths in scientific research and international cooperation, and provided a thorough overview of CPJRC's significant accomplishments in construction, scientific research, and academic exchanges since its inception. Prof. Mumtaz Shah, Chairman of the Department of Earth Sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University and Pakistani Project Leader of CPJRC, provided a detailed overview of CPJRC's development plans, as well as the progress made in personnel recruitment, campus construction, and establishment of its academic and governing body.

Participants conducted in-depth discussions on cooperation between China and Pakistan in disaster prevention and mitigation, as well as the construction and operation of CPJRC, and reached a series of consensus.

After the meeting, Mr. Sajid Baloch and his delegation also visited the Monitoring, Early Warning, and Forecasting Platform of Mountain Hazards and the Experimental Simulation Hall, where they gained firsthand understanding of the research facilities and technological accomplishments of IMHE in related fields.

The visit was also attended by Mr. Zain ul Abedin, Director of the International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan, Mr. Khan Muhammad, Science Counselor of the Pakistani Embassy in China, Mr. Agha Hunain Abbas Khan, Deputy Consulate-General of the Pakistani General Consulate in Chengdu, and Prof. Mohammad Qasim Jan, Foreign Academician of CAS and recipient of the CAS International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. Prof. Ge Yonggang, Head of the Science and Technology Department of IMHE, Prof. Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of CPJRC, and key researchers attended the meeting.
