China-Pakistan Training Workshop
On Monitoring and Early Warning Technologies of Tsunami and Marine Hazards
July 13-17,2024
China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a flagship project of "One Belt, One Road" Initiative, and its terminus, Gwadar, is of great significance to the economic cooperation and strategic development of the two countries. However, the Makran Sea, which is part of the Indo-Eurasian plate collision zone, a seismically active zone and one of the shallowest trenches in the world, is close to Gwadar and geologically extremely special, Chinese and Pakistani scientists have been conducting collaborative research in this area for many years.
In 2017, the South China Sea Institute of Oceanography (SCSIO), Chinese Academy of Sciences, signed a cooperation agreement with National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Pakistan and successfully carried out the ‘First China-Pakistan Joint Scientific Research Voyage’ in the Northern Indian Ocean, which was a pioneering step in the China-Pakistan cooperation on marine research. In 2019, China-Pakistan Sub-Centre for Ocean and Environment under the framework of China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre on Earth Sciences (CPJRC) was set up based on the scientific researchers of SCSIO, and has continued to promote the research on geotectonics and early warning of oceanic hazards in the northern Indian Ocean, especially the Makran Trench, in recent years.
In order to enhance the capacity building of young researchers in the field of marine hazards, monitoring and early warning, to promote the cooperation between China and Pakistan in the marine hazard prevention and control system, and to promote the applications of China's advantageous tsunami and marine earthquake early warning and monitoring technologies in Pakistan, CPJRC will host a “China-Pakistan Training Workshop On Monitoring and Early Warning Technologies of Tsunami and Marine Hazards” with SCSIO in July 2024 in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China.
Time: July 13-17, 2024
Venue: Multipurpose Lecture Room,SCSIO, Guangzhou
The training workshop will be a combination of lectures, practice and visits.
Experts and scholars from the SCSIO, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTECH), and National Institute of Oceanography, Pakistan (NIO) will be invited to give lectures on monitoring and early warning of marine disasters.
