CPJRC New High-altitude Weather Station Set in Central Karakoram

Publisher: CPJRC

time: 2024-09-04

CPJRC recently collaborated with Karakoram International University (KIU) to install a groundbreaking weather station at a breathtaking elevation of 3200 meters in Miacher Stream area in Nager District, opposite Hunza City, where is in the heart of the central Karakoram region. This marks CPJRC’s second high-tech weather station in the area, following the successful launch of the Shishper weather station in 2023, which sits at 2500 meters.

After a long period of scientific investigation, the bilateral research team led by Dr. Bazai, Special Research Assistant of CPJRC found that the dynamic Miacher Stream area, known for its dramatic glacier avalanches and debris flows, is vital for real-time monitoring and data collection because of the avalanches occurring annually and debris flows happening two to three times a year. Despite the norm of permitting only one international weather station in the region, Dr. Bazai and the KIU team’s relentless efforts and persistent dialogue with local authorities have made this extraordinary project a reality.

The Miacher Stream Weather Station is different from the others. It doesn’t just monitor the basics. It’s equipped to track an extensive range of climatic variables, including rainfall, solid rainfall, temperature, soil temperature, wind speed, wind direction, solar radiation, humidity, atmospheric pressure, snow depth and a monitoring live camera. This comprehensive data collection will be poised to provide invaluable insights into the region’s unique and challenging climate.

In the future, this Weather Station will not only help scientists obtain scientific research data, but also help communities and people living in these disaster-prone areas prepare for disaster prevention and reduction, protect their own lives and property, and promote international scientific and technological cooperation.

In addition, the bilateral cooperation team has installed a hydrometer station for the Shishper Stream in the area. These stations will monitor the discharge of debris flow and avalanches, providing crucial data on the meltwater rate of the glacier.
