From May 23 to 27, the EGU 2022 Science Conference was hosted by the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in Vienna, Austria. EGU is Europe's top earth science academic organization. It is formed by merging the European Geophysical Society (EGS) and the European Union of Geosciences (EUG). It is committed to studying the laws of earth science and planetary and space science. One of the famous earth science events, each annual meeting brings together more than 10,000 scientists worldwide. This annual meeting will be conducted in a mixed way of "online + offline", and Dr Bazai participated online.

Dr Bazai, a Post-doctoral researcher from CPJRC, participated virtually in the European Geoscience Union 2022 Annual Meeting (EGU 2022) and gave a speech entitled " Increasing the episodic glacial lake outburst flood hazard in response to surge glaciers in the Karakoram" in session CR3.4: Risks from a changing cryosphere under host Convener: Matthew Westoby. This research was carried out under the joint guidance of Professor Cui Peng, Director of CPJRC and Professor Carling A Pual from the University of Southampton, Southampton, UK, and mainly exploring the main factor of ice dam lake formation and prediction of GLOF, compiling the historical record of ice dams between 1500 century to 2020, then 30 years of temporal and spatial variability of glacier surge and relationship with velocity fluctuation and crevasse variation.

These research findings provide a fundamental basis for future studies on the lake's formation, factors of outburst flood, predicting GLOF in response to glacier surge, velocity fluctuation and crevasses development. Overall, it suggests that Global warming positive feedback is responsible for an increased glacial lake outburst flood hazard in Karakoram glaciers.
