CPJRC and Karakoram International University signed the DoU to jointly establish the Karakoram Observation and Research Station on Natural Hazards and Environmental (KORS)

On February 19, 2025, the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as CPJRC) and the Karakoram International University, Pakistan (hereinafter referred to as KIU) signed a cooperation agreement to jointly establish the Karakoram Observation and Research Station on Natural Hazards and Environmental (KORS). Prof. Attaullah Shah, Vice Chancellor of KIU, Prof. Kang Shichang, Director-General of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS in Chengdu (hereinafter referred to as IMHE), Prof. Su Lijun, Director-General of CPJRC, Academician Cui Peng, Deputy Director and Chief Scientist of CPJRC, and Prof. Lei Yu, Deputy Director of CPJRC, attended the event. The conference was chaired by Prof. Hong Tianhua, Executive Director of CPJRC.
Prof. Kang Shichang expressed his warm welcome to Vice Chancellor Shah’s arrival and emphasized the necessity and importance of cooperation between the two parties. He said that IMHE fully supports more practical and deeper cooperation between the two parties in scientific research cooperation, academic exchanges, talent cultivation, and scientific research conditions.
Prof. Su Lijun introduced the KORS construction background, functions, and development prospects, and expressed the hope that the signing of the DoU would serve as an opportunity to accelerate in-depth cooperation between the two parties in more fields and directions.
Prof. Shah said that KIU has been committed to establishing long-term cooperative relationships with Chinese universities and research institutions. The cooperation with CPJRC this time will provide important scientific basis and technical support for disaster warning and prevention in the region, offer valuable exchange and learning opportunities for teachers and students, and contribute to enhancing the scientific research capabilities and international influence of both parties in respective fields.
After that, Prof. Shah and Prof. Su Lijun signed the DoU on behalf of both parties. According to the DoU, the two parties will further cooperate to establish the KORS in Gilgit and set up the disaster monitoring stations in the northern mountainous regions, jointly contributing to acquiring scarce observational data from the high-altitude and cold regions of Karakoram as well as to disaster warning and prevention efforts in China and Pakistan.
After the signing ceremony, both parties had an in-depth discussion on the construction of observation towers in the future and reached a consensus.
