The “ANSO International Training Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction and Green Development for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor hosted by CPJRC and funded by the Alliance of National and International Science Organizations for the Belt and Road Regions (ANSO), has been officially approved by UNESCO and included in the list of endorsed activities under the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024-2033), known as the “Science Decade.” This marks the training workshop as an important component of global scientific action for sustainable development.

The Science Decade initiative was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2023 to address complex challenges facing global sustainable development, including climate change and disaster prevention. Comprising programs, projects, and activities, the initiative takes interdisciplinary integration as its core approach, fostering in-depth collaboration among fundamental sciences, applied sciences, social sciences, and the humanities to tackle global development challenges and accelerate the achievement of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The training workshop is led by CPJRC and jointly organized with UNESCO Chair for Mountain Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience, Alliance of International Science Organizations on Disaster Risk Reduction (ANSO-DRR) , and Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), with strong support from international platforms including International Association of Natural Resources (IAONR) and the China-Italy Joint Laboratory on Geological and Hydrological Hazards. The instructors come mainly from research teams at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment and the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, bringing solid theoretical foundations and extensive practical experience. The first workshop session will be held in June 2026, targeting participants primarily from less developed countries in South Asia and Africa. Through systematic training, the workshop aims to strengthen regional capacity for geological disaster prevention and contribute to sustainable development across the region.

The training will focus on cutting-edge topics such as disaster early warning and forecasting, risk assessment models, climate action pathways, and green governance, promoting the deep integration of earth sciences and sustainability science. Beyond knowledge and skills training, the workshop will showcase China’s advanced disaster reduction technologies and green development concepts and practices, contributing Chinese scientific and technological solutions to global challenges such as disaster prevention and sustainable development. Using the training as a platform, the initiative seeks to build a transnational scientific cooperation network among Global South countries, promote knowledge sharing in disaster risk reduction and green development, and strengthen the development of young talent.
